CHARLESTON, IL. – The Tennessee State women’s basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, but fell to the Eastern Illinois Panthers 75-58 on the road Saturday.
The Lady Tigers (8-14, 3-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Gia Adams, who had 19 points. Ashley Malone added 11 points and three steals from the bench and Erica Haynes-Overton chipped in as well with 10 points and four steals.
Led by Lyric Cole’s seven offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 17 second chance points.
Tennessee State did a great job disrupting Eastern Illinois shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Saniah Parker led the way individually for the Lady Tigers with two rejections.
How It Happened
Tennessee State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Eastern Illinois kept adding to that lead, building a 28-16 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Ever Walker, to narrow its deficit to 28-22. Eastern Illinois responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Tigers trailing 35-25 heading into halftime.
Tennessee State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Tigers faced a 60-41 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
Tennessee State narrowed its deficit to 61-46 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Adams’ three, to shrink the deficit to 61-51 with 6:23 to go in the contest. Eastern Illinois responded and outscored the Lady Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-58. Tennessee State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 17 total points.
